After the initial idea of forming an artists cooperative was met with applause, a name for the cooperative was needed. Lee Sauder, a current member and resident blacksmith, had returned to Rockbridge County from Maine and was a member of the fledgling cooperative.
During a brainstorming session, he put forth the name, “Artists in Cahoots”, which was the slogan for a cooperative in Camden, Maine. The suggestion was met with yays and it remains our name to this day. As does Lee, who can be found working at the gallery where his cheese knives continue to please. Back then he’d tote a foot-powered grinding wheel to the shop and sharpened knives to pass the time!
